Telephone triage is not wrong! I am currently the
manager of an after-hours nurse triage service and have been appalled to find out the
there is a serious lack of patient education that is going on in the PCP office. How
can a parent know what to do when her child is having an asthma attack when no one ever
taught her how to use a peak-flow meter. Mom's aren't even aware of what their
child's baseline should be. When asked what their treatment plan is the reply is to
contact the doctor. Let's hope that the physician on-call isn't a backup physician
for their primary doctor -- because the information that is provided will totally
inconsistent with the information generally provided by their regular physician. Telephone triage provides consistently to an unconsistent field. Physician's are scheduling sick patient visits every 10 mins. during the ay. I don't know about anyone else, but it is impossible to remember to discuss everything with your physician in 10 mins. When I listen to tapes of parents who are connected with the on-call physician after
being triaged by the nurse -- the tone and assurance that the parent had while talking to
the nurse has diminished with the initial hello from the physician. |
