Dr. Baron suggests
that a "new paradigm" must be proposed, but he fails to do so. Thus, after
having concluded that physicians are "clearly" both labor and management (in all
circumstances, no less), he perceives the adoption of a "labor" label as an
abrogation of the "management" role. This is flawed. Before reinventing models that will take years to implement (assuming anyone can learn them in time), one must respect current forces that are destroying the profession. Thus, absent a clear depiction of what is envisioned, Dr. Baron begs the question. This is precisely the error made by the others who critique without adding to the debate, delaying further the (re)empowerment sorely needed by physicians. NEW JERSEY was bound to fail, but purely- employed physicians (40% of the workforce) can be organized, with benefits to be accrued by the rest of us. Collective Bargaining is needed for those who can avail themselves thereof. I do not start my aguments from a perspective that ignores ANY key factor buffetting our profession, and I would challenge Dr. Baron to explain otherwise. In present-day society, physicians who are employed have certain rights which are a SUBSET of their professionalism, but which nevertheless CANNOT be ignored. In all my conversations with colleagues following publication of my "PPG" essay, no one has provided a cogent countervailing approach. Thus, Dr. Baron's perspective is refreshing but, ultimately, as empty as the rhetoric put forth by many organized medicine leaders. It's time to act! |
