Another bad experience

By Martin E. Schick M.D.

I too have UNUM disability insurance since 1981 and I never missed a payment. I became sick and sought therapy in 1992 and after continuing to hang in there for a couple of years, I tried a new environment thinking it would cure my
problems which I did not realize were an illness. I got worse until I could no longer practice by the latter part of 1994. It took intensive medical care including medications and therapy for me to even realize how ill I had become. I was flat out denied my claim. I appealed but was denied. I had no other recourse except to sue. The company has been truly deceitful and has acted in bad faith. I have found many MD's who have had similar experiences with various insurers. It is a catch 22. You have the d.i. company which should be helping you. They promised to help when they
sold you the policy. Instead they become your enemy. If you can regain your health, the DI companies will use that fact to support their position that you were never disabled.
