'Present worth' is simpler, more direct

I’d like to respond to the letter from Robert B. Sklaroff MD, about the lawsuit abuse reform legislation currently before the Pennsylvania Senate and the portion of that bill relating to periodic payments as opposed to the concept of reducing awards to present worth. First, the lawsuit abuse reform legislation is being supported by a coalition and the bill addresses the needs of the larger group, not just the medical community. Second, with more than two decades of experience in the area of tort reform, the Civil Justice Coalition concluded that the simpler, more direct approach of reducing awards to present worth yielded nearly the same savings and was the more appropriate way to go. We agree.
