Parity in prescribing between nurses & PAs

By Gerald R Keenan

Published November 1999

Representative Vance is to be applauded for moving this legislation (HB50) forward, however she has disrespected and misrepresented a vital health professional in Pennsylvania- the Physician Assistant. HB 50's defence should not be to the advantage or disadvantage of one health professinal over another, rather, it should laude the benefit of increased patient care. PAs DO possess equivelent and in somecases greater CLINICAL training and education that a clinical Nurse specialist and/or a Nurse practitioner. HB 50 lacks the appropriate oversight for prescribing saftey and  as a former member of the Pennsylvania Drug Device and Cosmetics Board I am concerned that parity of prescribing in Pennsylvania seems not to be in view.
