UNUM Insurance has denied my claim based on medical information that
they have "never received" after three years and five doctors'
opinions. Although my medical records were sent to UNUM on eight
separate occasions, the agent "never received" any information
from my doctor. I even copied the records myself and sent them
registered mail but they were refused since I had "provided the
information myself" and the copies were not certified. When they
finally did get my medical records, the agent handling my case was
replaced.
The new agent claimed that there was insufficient evidence to prove my
case even though the information provided was sufficient for other
insurance carriers to finally pay my claim without further harassment.
She noted that all my complaints were "self-reported." Well
who is the doctor supposed to ask what problems I am having or how I
feel?
I was an engineering technician for 12 years at the same test facility,
no problems. In a car accident in which I was tail-ended and my car was
totaled, I had suffered a neck and shoulder injury, and a closed head
injury. I am unable to balance, walk straight, concentrate, focus my
eyes, remember anything, I sometimes black out and involuntarily fall
asleep. I exhibit all but a few of the "Classic" symptoms of
closed head injury. My right shoulder has deteriorated to the point that
I must have corrective surgery to regain the use of my right arm. Nobody
wants to employ a 52 year old with a pre-existing condition.
Not a penny from UNUM. According to them, there is no medical evidence
and I am perfectly able to perform my job. Their experts have concluded
that my claim was based on "sensitivity to loud noises" and
that I would be fine if I would only wear ear plugs.
All insurance carriers have abused the laws to their advantage: I was
harassed by AAA for a year or so, I am currently suing State Farm. The
worst ever is yet to come - UNUM. No lawyer even wants to touch this one
because they already know what to expect.
".....foot-dragging and stonewalling until you either give up, die
or run out of money. They are fully aware of what they are doing and
they probably never intended to pay anyhow".
Their typical insurance claim practices are common knowledge. Is there
not sufficient evidence that UNUM is at least guilty of Consumer fraud
and Mail fraud, collecting premiums under false pretenses? They even
burn the "well connected" and slide by?
